About

Hatoya is a small vegan fruit sandwich stand in the Asakusa neighborhood, a few minutes walk from Senso ji Temple. The concept is simple: large pieces of fresh seasonal fruit layered with vegan whipped cream between soft, fluffy white bread. Fruit sandwiches (fruits sando) are a popular Japanese snack format that typically uses dairy cream and sometimes eggs in the bread, making vegan versions rare. Hatoya makes both the cream and bread fully plant based. The selection rotates with the seasons and has included strawberry, kiwi, orange, melon, pineapple, and a red bean paste and strawberry combination. There's also a matcha drink menu with oat milk available. The shop is tiny, more of a takeaway window than a restaurant, with a small bench for eating on the spot. It fits naturally into the Asakusa tabearuki (eating while walking) culture that the neighborhood is known for.
